Naan khattai. Nankhatai is a popular and traditional Indian cookie which is equally liked by kids as well as elders. Nankhatai can be called as Indian shortbread cookies or biscuits. Nankhatai recipe - Delicious, light & crisp eggless cookies made with flour, ghee, cardamom powder and sugar.

Naan khattai Naan Khatai is India's very own desi biscuit which is made in an open oven (you can make it in your OTG or cooker or convection oven also). It is soft and melt-in-the mouth biscuit and has a unique taste with an unmistakable aroma of desi ghee, which distinguishes it from other cookies. Nan khatai is an authentic Indian sweet and savory eggless cookie that can be easily prepared at home. You can have Naan khattai using 6 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you achieve it.

Ingredients of Naan khattai

  1. Prepare 1/2 cup of ghee.
  2. It's 1/2 cup of powdered sugar.
  3. You need 2 spoons of sooji.
  4. You need 1 cup of besan(gram flour).
  5. It's 1/2 cup of Maida (All purpose flour).
  6. You need As needed of Almonds.

In its authentic recipe, ghee, maida, rava (sooji), gram flour (besan) and sugar are used but nowadays it is generally prepared without using gram flour and rava. The word Nankhatai is derived from Persian word Naan meaning bread and "Khatai" from a Dari Persian word meaning Biscuit. In Afghanistan and Northeast Iran, these biscuits are called Kulcha-e-Khataye. Kulcha is a type of Indian bread similar to Naan.

Naan khattai step by step

  1. Take a bowl and add ghee, powdered sugar and suji into it.
  2. Rub the ingredients using your palm for 5 mins.
  3. Now add maida and besan into it and make a soft dough, add some more ghee if you feel the dough is too hard or dry.
  4. Take a kadai and add some salt along into it, put a stand and let it pre heat for 10 mins.
  5. Make small round shapes of the prepared dough and put cuts on it as per your choice using a folk.
  6. Decorate them using your favourite nuts available at home, i have used almonds.
  7. Now put the into the preheated kadai for 20 mins on low flame.
  8. After 20 mins switch off the flame and let it cool into the kadai for another 15 mins.
  9. Serve the crispy naan kattai to guests and family with tea.

The word Nankhatai is derived from Persian word Naan meaning bread and Khatai from an Afghan word meaning Biscuit. They are a hot favorite of kids and people across all ages. Also happens to be my favorite dessert all the time. It's just the aroma of nankhatai while passing through a bakery would tempt and crave me to eat them. Nankhatai is very old Indian shortbread cookie. 'Nan' means bread and 'khatai' means cookie.
